You know it as one of the most well-known, sought-after, and respected jobs among the working class. The title of “Driver” has quickly become one of the most popular jobs in the United States, accounting for over 1.3 million workers.

Luckily, those high numbers don’t imply oversaturation, so you can still get in on the action! Let’s talk about how to become a package Driver in 2022!

Why Become a Delivery Driver?

The general job description is similar between different companies.  If you like to drive, you like seeing new things, and you love the peace and solitude of the open road, then this could be the job for you. Unless you have a helper during busy seasons, you will generally be alone. Many Drivers thrive with this structure.

However, that’s far from the only reason to become a package Driver. Job growth and security are other major factors with the seemingly never-ending rise of eCommerce sales. Drivers are in high demand, which means these jobs usually offer full-time work, good benefits, and relative job security.

Modern delivery jobs are also known for bonuses, retirement funds, safety programs, paid vacation, and holiday pay. All of this combines to make one of the best jobs you can secure with a low barrier of entry.  Also, the holidays often come with overtime pay, which means additional money for the family!

Requirements for Package Delivery Drivers

If this sounds like something you’re interested in, there are things you’ll need to get started. First, you need the right to work in the United States if you want to drive here, but that’s not all. Here’s what else you’ll need.

Education

Often, Drivers will need to have a high school diploma or equivalent. Some companies have different requirements, but this is the most common requirement throughout the US.

License and Driving Experience

Professional experience is not always necessary, although it is a plus.  Having a Driver’s license and a few years experience on the road is highly recommended. Remember, you will be driving all day for work on different terrains and road types, entering and exiting the vehicle multiple times per day, and maneuvering in tight spaces and possibly in heavy traffic.

Most positions require you to be at least  21 years of age with at least one to three years driving experience.

Clean Driving Record

Maintaining a clean driving record is critical for the job. One speeding ticket may not create a problem, but more serious violations like DUIs, license suspensions or reckless driving will. If there is a repeated habit like speeding or driving through stop signs on your record, this will likely hinder your ability to find work in the field.

Some companies will also require a criminal background check and a DOT drug screening, so be prepared.

Solid Work History

It doesn’t have to involve driving, but many companies will look at your work experience. They want to know you’re a good worker, that you manage company property well (like large vehicles), and that you engage positively with customers.

How to Become a Package Delivery Driver

If you don’t meet one or more of the qualifications mentioned above, work to boost your resume. Delivery Driver jobs are still on an upward trend, so they won’t be going away any time soon.  If you believe you meet the requirements, apply and work your way toward becoming a Driver. Most jobs will offer on-the-job training, especially for operating trucks safely.

If your goal is to drive bigger trucks and grow within the career, having any class of CDL will help. This will help you stand out from other applicants and improve your chances of receiving an offer of employment.

Ask For References

Talk to previous employers or supervisors and ask for a reference, especially if driving was a part of your job.  Tell them about the position for which you are applying. If they agree to provide a reference, then you’re one step closer.

Find the Right Company

You want to work for a company that meets your needs. Compare job listings that match your qualifications and look for growth opportunities.  For example, maybe you are only qualified to drive delivery vans but you want to be a Truck Driver. In that case, find a company that offers both and apply as a van Driver while building up your qualifications!

Other than that, look for a job you can secure that meets your schedule requirements, desired salary, and the benefits you need for you and your family. Once you find that, move forward!

Update Your Resume and Apply

From there, all you have to do is apply for a Driver position in your area and show off any relevant experience you may have.

Have you ever driven a large vehicle? Mention it in your application. If you were an Uber/Lyft Driver, if you have previous delivery experience, or if you have customer service experience, don’t be afraid to mention it to potential employers, as this will only help you stand out from the competition.
